SACK 2026 Statewide Self-Advocacy Conference a Huge Success

Brad, Jason, and Phillip stand in front of a room. They have their hand raised and many peoplein the audience also have their hand raised.

The SACK 2026 Statewide Self-Advocacy Conference was held June 19-21, 2026, at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Manhattan, Kansas.

Self-advocates from across Kansas (and beyond! Even our self-advocacy allies from Nebraska) came together, learned from each other, and reminded us all why this work matters.

Friday night during registration, many attendees enjoyed Kona Ice Snow Cones outside. So many flavor choices!

On Saturday, the conference kicked off with our friend, Anthony Frischenmeyer, who helped us mold clay projects and explore how we can use art as an advocacy and mindfulness tool.

Learning session topics or the day included

  1. Ableism, Racism, Homophobia & more, Oh My!
  2. Self-Advocacy 101
  3. Emerging & Innovative Technology
  4. Wages-How much should I be paid for my work?
  5. Oral Health Kansas
  6. Self-Advocates will lead the way!
  7. Advocacy in the Age of Al
  8. Working for Money
  9. More Than Just a Crown: Our year as Ms. Wheelchair Kansas Titleholders!
  10. Healthy Relationships
  11. Supported Decision Making

Saturday’s lunch featured a panel featuring Shari Coatney, Brad Linnenkamp, Sheila Nelson-Stout, and

Stephani Sanford on the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Through The Years. Shari, Stephanie & Brad discussed the ADA and how things have changed and how we still have a fight ahead of us! Outgoing SACK Secretary Tim Sanders moderated the panel.

Saturday night at dinner, we recognized Steph Sanford and celebrated her retirement.

Sunday morning, we gave away door prizes and raffle prizes and announced this year’s award winners:

  • Support Staff of the Year award winner – Tim Bettes from OCCK
  • Self-Advocate of the Year award winner – Michael Fairchild

Thank you to everyone who attended the conference, and all of our conference sponsors, presenters, volunteers, and supporters for making this year’s conference extraordinary!
